Get a credential
Advisor accepts two credentials. A subscriber signs in through their MCP client with their Advisor account. A partner platform, which calls Advisor with no person present, holds an API key. Use the one that matches who is making the calls.
| Fact | Subscriber sign-in | Partner API key |
|---|---|---|
| Who it is for | A person using an AI client | A platform's backend, with no person present |
| How it is sent | OAuth 2.1 access token, handled by the client | Authorization: Bearer <API key> on every request |
| How you get it | Sign in when your client asks | Issue it on the Advisor partner page |
| What it needs | An active Advisor AI Pro subscription | An organisation owned by an AI Pro subscriber |
| Lifetime | Managed by your client | 90 days; rotate before it expires |
Before you begin
- An Advisor account with an active AI Pro subscription.
Subscriber sign-in
- Add Advisor to your client (Connect a client).
- When the client asks, sign in with your Advisor account in the browser it opens.
- Call
healthto check the connection.
Your client registers itself with Advisor's sign-in service (OAuth dynamic client registration). Do not paste a Client ID into a client that registers itself: a Client ID registered for one client fails in another.
Partner API key
- In Advisor, open the Partner page and create your organisation. Accept the partner terms, and the Hansard conditions of use if you will call the Hansard tools.
- Add a client for each workload or environment.
- Issue a key. It is shown once: copy it into your secret store.
- Set it as
LAWATLAS_API_KEYwhere your platform runs, and connect (Connect a client, partner tabs).
See Partner API keys for rotation, revocation and the IP allowlist.
Warning: Calls made with a key are billed to the AI Pro subscription of the organisation that owns it, at the published per-call price. Each call that returns content is billed once; a call that finds nothing, or is refused, is not.
Troubleshooting
| Problem | Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| HTTP 401 with a key | The key is unknown, revoked, suspended or expired, or was issued in another environment | Check its status on the partner page; issue a new key |
FORBIDDEN: keys are paused | The owning organisation's AI Pro subscription is not active | Renew the subscription |
TERMS_REQUIRED on a Hansard tool | The organisation has not accepted the current Hansard conditions | Accept them on the partner page |
